Grand opening of the new wing of the CUHK Art Museum, Lo Kwai-Sheung Pavilion

The opening exhibition of "The Pure Sounds of the World: Art and Culture of Jiangnan in the Late Ming Dynasty" was held to showcase national treasures The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Art Museum’s new wing, Lo Kwai-sheung Pavilion, and the Lee Ho-wo and Luk Yan-kwan Exhibition Hall (21 March) held a grand opening ceremony and unveiled the opening exhibition “Floating World and Pure Sounds: Art and Culture of Jiangnan in the Late Ming Dynasty”, showcasing the results of the many years of collaboration between the Art Museum and the Shanghai Museum. All are welcome to visit from 22 March 2025 (Saturday). Officiating guests at the ceremony included Ms. Law Suk-pui, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Dr. Chu Xiaobo, Director of the Shanghai Museum, Dr. Lo Tak Shing, Chairman of the Lo Kwee-seong Foundation, Dr. Vince Lee, Chairman of Hysan Development Company Limited, Professor Dennis Lo, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, and Dr. Jimmy Yim, Chairman of Jimmy Yim Architects. Professor Dennis Lo said in his speech at the ceremony, “We are not only celebrating the opening of a new landmark, but also a new chapter in CUHK’s promotion of the popularization of the arts. Two years ago, I witnessed in person the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Art Museum and the Palace Museum in Beijing, which led to the exhibition of the Art Museum’s treasures in the Forbidden City. With the completion of the new wing of the Art Museum, I look forward to more of the museum’s various art treasures being exhibited here. I hope that the transformation of the Art Museum at CUHK will help enhance interdisciplinary research related to culture and the arts, promote in-depth collaboration among academic institutions, and provide students with high-quality object-based training.” Ms. Law Suk-pui said in her speech, “Over the years, we are pleased to see the continuous development of the CUHK Art Museum, and we have also witnessed the process of Hong Kong becoming a hub for cultural and artistic exchanges between China and foreign countries. I am honored to attend the opening ceremony of the Lo Kwai-sheung Pavilion and the Lee Hau-wo and Luk Ng-kwan Exhibition Hall of the CUHK Art Museum. I deeply feel that the growth of the CUHK Art Museum is inseparable from the continuous efforts of CUHK colleagues and the support and love from all walks of life. I believe that the increasingly improved CUHK Art Museum will also become a unique charm of Hong Kong, attracting more citizens and visitors to Hong Kong, and providing everyone with a unique cultural and artistic experience.” Dr. Lo Tak-shing said in his speech, “Arts and culture can nourish the spiritual civilization of society. Art education is an important cornerstone for cultivating character. We hope to enrich the soul and spread the essence of art and culture through the CUHK Art Museum. The architectural design of this museum is also meaningful. Its unique appearance symbolizes the character of ‘simplicity’, ‘humility’, ‘efficiency’ and ‘solidity’. Its cantilever structure represents our responsibility to the society and marks our mission to continue the cultural heritage together. These are the precious qualities we hope the younger generation can pass on.” Dr. Lee Wan-lin said in her speech, “My father, Lee Ho-wo, was dedicated to promoting Chinese art and culture in Hong Kong, and my mother was a passionate collector. More than half a century ago, my parents, together with my fourth uncle, Dr. Lee Wing-sum, assisted Dr. Lee Choh-man, the founding president of CUHK, in establishing the Institute of Chinese Culture and the Museum. In recent years, CUHK has made rapid progress. To become a pioneer in the international stage of higher education, we must continue to promote Chinese culture and art.” Lo Kwai-sheung Pavilion and the Lee Ho Wo and Luk Ngan Kwan Exhibition Hall of the Art Museum The new wing of the Museum, Lo Kwai Sheung Pavilion, which was completed and opened in March 2025, was designed by internationally renowned architect Dr. Yan Xunqi. It is a cantilevered structure standing on the slope of the Zhongda Mountain City, with a low-key and elegant appearance. The exposed concrete exterior reflects the University’s emphasis on practicality and allows the new wing to blend perfectly with CUHK’s scholarly atmosphere and natural landscape. This new landmark for art and academia will enhance Hong Kong’s status as a cultural and arts hub. The construction of the new wing and new exhibition hall of the Art Museum benefited from the generous donations from the Lo Kwai Seong Foundation and the Lee Ho Woo family, enabling the Art Museum to further integrate artistic creation, curatorial and teaching, and develop richer and more diverse museum activities. In addition, the Lee Hysan Foundation also donated an additional HK$20 million to the CUHK Art Museum to support related art education projects and benefit the community. The opening exhibition of the New Wing, "Floating World and Pure Sounds - Art and Culture of Jiangnan in the Late Ming Dynasty", is jointly organized by the Art Museum, Shanghai Museum and the Department of Art of CUHK, and sponsored by the Beishantang Foundation. It is the largest exhibition of the Art Museum to date, displaying a total of 193 treasures from local and overseas sources, including calligraphy and paintings and various artifacts, to present the rich and colorful material life and unique artistic style of the late Ming Dynasty. Among them, nine national first-class cultural relics are exhibited in Hong Kong for the first time. #goodplacetodischarge #discharge #goodplacesforfamily #holidayfamilytravel #localtravel #goodplacesinhongkong #goodplacesforweekdays #goodplacesforweekends #goodplaces #localfamilytravel #familytravel #parents #familyactivities #check-inattractions #check-in #hklifestyle #hkdaily #hkiger #hkig #hongkong #hk #instadaily #travelhk #discoverhk #explorehongkong #exploringhongkong #discoverhongkong #awesomehongkong
