Hiking Diary | Sai Kung Tai Tun's Thousand Islands Lake

When it comes to the 'Thousand Islands Lake' of Hong Kong, one naturally thinks of the Tai Lam Chung Reservoir, which is most suitable for beginners' hiking; however, with the growing popularity of hiking among Hongkongers in recent years and the accumulation of experience, perhaps they are no longer satisfied with just beginner trails. This time, I have specially selected another slightly more challenging 'Thousand Islands Lake' of Hong Kong—Tai Tun, to show everyone the beauty of the islands around Sai Kung. Tai Tun is located in the Sai Kung East Country Park, at an elevation of 317 meters. From the summit, one can enjoy an unobstructed view of the mountains around Sai Kung, which is refreshing and uplifting. It is also possible to gaze at the outer islands of Sai Kung such as Kau Sai Chau, Pak Sha Chau, and Kiu Tsui Chau, hence the reputation as Sai Kung's Thousand Islands Lake. Many hikers are drawn here to take on the challenge. Since the area around Tai Tun is very open, many people come here to watch the sunset. However, it should be noted that the paths up and down Tai Tun are quite difficult; the ascent is steep, and the descent often requires the use of hands and feet. Therefore, it is recommended to allow extra time, and if planning to watch the sunset, even more time should be reserved, along with bringing a headlamp or flashlight. Itinerary Total distance: about 5 kilometers Time required: about 3.5 hours (excluding time for taking photos and resting) Transportation to the starting point: Take KMB bus no. 94 from Sai Kung Town Centre to Sai Kung Outdoor Training Camp stop ($7.2) Transportation to leave: Take KMB bus no. 94 from Pak Tam Chung Station back to Sai Kung Town ($7.2) Equipment: Non-slip shoes, sun protection, hiking gloves, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, sufficient food and water ■Warm Tips Know your limits, and do not force yourself to proceed on rugged mountain paths. Before taking photos, observe the surroundings to ensure the location is safe. Do not risk it for a good view.
