World Heritage Site: Itsukushima Shrine

#Western Japan Founded at the end of the 6th century during the reign of Empress Suiko, the entire island was revered as a divine island, so the shrine was built at the site of the tides, which was considered too sacred to be built on land. The current elegant Shinden-zukuri shrine building was designed by Taira no Kiyomori. The large torii gate, standing about 200m offshore from the main worship hall, is made from natural camphor wood.
