China Seal Museum (Hangzhou)

The China Seal Museum is a national professional museum located at No. 10 Houshan Road, Gushan, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, covering an area of ​​more than 1,300 square meters. In October 1993, an application was submitted to establish the China Seal Museum, which was formally approved by the State Planning Commission and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage. In 1998, construction began. On September 26, 1999, the China Seal Museum officially opened. As of the end of 2019, the China Seal Museum had a collection of 914 pieces (sets) of cultural relics. Seals of various dynasties: show people the origin of seals along with the appearance of words, and the evolution process from stamping patterns to being used as credentials. With the changes in history, seals have presented different styles due to differences in shape, materials, taste and casting and chiseling techniques. School Seal Hall: There are Wen Peng, He Zhen and others who created the seal style, the "Eight Masters of Xiling" represented by Ding Jing, and the "Six Masters of Late Qing Dynasty" including Deng Shiru, Wu Rangzhi, Wu Changshuo, Zhao Zhiqian, Xu Sangeng, and Huang Mufu, who represented the Anhui School. Seal Material Hall: It brings together hundreds of seal materials including metals, minerals, ceramics, animal bones, etc. In ancient times, seals were mainly cast in metal. After the Tang and Song Dynasties, with the development of calligraphy and painting, the nature of seals changed due to the participation of literati and scholars. Seal materials gradually included ivory, horn, wood, etc. However, most seals were made by literati and carved by craftsmen. This opened up the way for seals to be made mainly of stone, and set a precedent for literati to create their own seals by carving them themselves. This laid the material foundation for the development of seal carving art and triggered the rise of seal carving art in Ming and Qing Dynasties. Seal Studies Hall: displays collections of seals and seal studies works by seal engravers in recent years. Xiling Seal Society History Hall: There are "Seal Gallery", "Seal Artists' Gallery", "Wu Changshuo Memorial Room", "Seal Creation and Research Room", "Tijing Hall", "Yangxian Hall" and other landscapes, reflecting the profoundness of Chinese traditional culture.
