Lingyin Temple

Lingyin Temple was first built in the first year of Xianhe period of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (326 AD), and its founder was the Western Indian monk Huili. Emperor Wu of Liang in the Southern Dynasties granted land and expanded the temple. During the Five Dynasties, King Qian Liu of Wuyue ordered Master Yongming Yanshou to rebuild and develop the temple and named it Lingyin New Temple. During the Jiading period of Emperor Ningzong of the Song Dynasty, Lingyin Temple was hailed as one of the "Five Mountains" of Zen Buddhism in Jiangnan. During the Shunzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, the Zen master Jude was the abbot of Lingyin Temple. He raised funds for its reconstruction. It took 18 years to build the temple alone. Its grand scale made it the "largest in the southeast." In the 28th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1689), Emperor Kangxi named the temple "Yunlin Zen Temple" during his southern tour.
