The predecessor of the Third China Silk Factory can be traced back to 1924, when local celebrities in Haining, such as Xu Shenru (father of modern Chinese poet Xu Zhimo) and Li Bolu, founded the Shuangshan Silk Factory. According to the Haining Industrial Chronicle, it was renamed several times, including "Poshi Shuangshan Xingji Silk Factory," "Tanshi Ruixin Silk Factory," and "Haining Cooperative Silk Company." In 1939, when the Japanese invaders occupied the area, it was renamed "Huazhong Silk Factory." After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, it was renamed the Third Silk Factory of the China Silk Company, abbreviated as "Third China Silk Factory." This place carries the memory of the modern industrial civilization of old Xiasi. In the 1990s, the Third China Silk Factory reached its peak, with products mainly exported to Japan, Germany, Hong Kong, and other countries and regions. According to the Haining Industrial Chronicle, in 1990, the total industrial output value of the Third China Silk Factory was 48.639 million yuan, with a profit of 4.7116 million yuan and foreign exchange earnings of 4.7116 million US dollars. Over time, the Third China Silk Factory underwent restructuring and decline, with the site being subleased to cultural and creative studios, restaurants, and more. Thus, the role of the Third China Silk Factory as an industrial production site has come to an end, and it is now taking steps to become a "city living room." In line with the Zhimo Hometown Xiasi project, which aims to create a differentiated cultural theme, the Third China Silk Factory focuses on "industrial culture," with the main themes of recalling, experiencing, and creating China Silk, to build an industrial culture experience system of "Made in Haining." In other words, from the initial design, it was clear that the Third China Silk Factory would continue the industrial architectural style, inherit the city's historical culture, and create a unique "internet-famous check-in spot." Strolling through the Third China Silk Factory, a "foreign" artistic atmosphere greets you. The once weathered buildings have been renovated and look brand new, as if they are wearing new clothes. Throughout the area, preserved structures such as chimneys, water towers, and white goddess sculptures bear the marks of time and continue to tell their stories.
