The temple was established during the Unified Silla period by Monk Deokun and a monk named Suruga from India. It was originally called Gamnosa because of a clear and cool spring within the temple grounds. It was said that drinking the spring water would clear one's mind. After being damaged during the Japanese invasions of Korea, the temple was rebuilt. However, a large serpent frequently appeared at the spring, and after it was killed, the spring stopped flowing. The temple's name was changed to Cheoneunsa, meaning 'hidden spring', but mysterious fires and disasters continued to occur. This news reached Yi Gwang-sa, one of the four great calligraphers of the Joseon Dynasty. He wrote the name 'Cheoneunsa' in a flowing script and hung it on the Iljumun gate, after which the disasters ceased. Cheoneunsa Temple is also famous as a filming location for the drama 'Mr. Sunshine'.
