Guangxiao Temple

“Guangxiao Temple existed before Guangzhou.” Guangxiao Temple was originally built during the Three Kingdoms period as Zhizhi Temple. It became a Zen temple during the Southern Song Dynasty, making it the oldest Zen temple in Lingnan with a history of over 1,700 years. It was originally named “Baon Guangxiao Zen Temple” by decree of Emperor Gaozong of Song in the 7th year of the Shaoxing period (1137). In the 21st year of the Shaoxing period (1151), the name was changed from “Guang” to “Guang,” and the name Guangxiao Temple was born. Guangxiao Temple is famous for the story of the Sixth Patriarch and the wind and flag. It is the place where the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism, Huineng, became a monk. The First Patriarch, Bodhidharma, also lived here, giving this ancient temple a special place in the history of Zen Buddhism. The temple is located on Guangxiao Road in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou.
