The key to my journey was a mix of regional trains, walking, and enjoying Austria's incredible free attractions. My adventure began in Vienna, a city that radiates imperial grandeur. Instead of spending money on expensive tours, I chose to explore on foot. I walked along the Ringstrasse, admired the majestic Hofburg Palace and St. Stephen's Cathedral, and took a long stroll through the Schönbrunn Palace gardens, which are free to enter. Vienna proved that the most beautiful sights are often the ones you can enjoy just by walking around. From Vienna, I took a regional train to Graz. The journey was scenic and comfortable. Graz has a youthful, vibrant energy, and I spent my time exploring the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. I climbed the Schlossberg hill for a panoramic view of the city's red roofs and unique Clock Tower. Graz’s many courtyards and art installations made it a delightful city to wander around without spending a cent. Next, I headed to the mountains. My train journey took me to Schladming, a town known for its winter sports. Since I was there in the summer, I enjoyed the stunning mountain scenery for free. I spent my days hiking on well-marked trails, taking in the views of the Dachstein massif. Hiking is the ultimate budget activity, and the fresh mountain air and breathtaking views were worth every step. My final destination was Hallstatt, a fairytale village tucked away by a lake. The journey from Schladming was particularly beautiful, with the train winding its way through valleys and past shimmering lakes. Upon arrival, I found that the village's magic lies in its simplicity. I spent my time walking through its narrow streets, taking photos of the iconic view, and enjoying the quiet beauty of the lake. The most memorable part was simply sitting by the water, watching the world go by. Tips for Traveling Austria on a Budget - Utilize Public Transport: Austria has an excellent network of regional trains and buses.
