Taking the limited express train from Nagoya, you can reach Gero Onsen Station in about 1.5 hours. As soon as you step off the train, the air is filled with a faint sulfur scent, instantly relaxing you. The "Gero Onsen Gassho Village" sign and the adorable frog mascot (the Japanese pronunciation of Gero resembles "Gero," the sound of a frog croak) immediately set the mood for sightseeing. Walking along the Hida River, you’ll soon arrive at the heart of the hot spring town. Unlike the bustling atmosphere of Hakone or Kusatsu, Gero offers a more laid-back and friendly vibe. ✅ Millennium Bath Shiragaki-no-Yu: This is Gero’s public bathhouse, offering affordable prices and a great opportunity for travelers to experience the local hot spring culture. ✅ Onsen Museum: A fun and educational spot showcasing the hot spring qualities from various regions of Japan. ✅ Onsen Manju and Onsen Pudding Shops: The old street is dotted with several shops selling freshly steamed treats. I bought a red bean-flavored manju, and eating it warm while strolling was the most comforting experience. ✅ Foot Bath Culture: Rest your tired feet Free foot baths are scattered throughout the old street. Whether couples or elderly pairs, everyone stops to soak their feet and chat. I spent some time at "Sagi-no-Ashi-Yu," where the water temperature was just right, and I felt completely warmed up as I soaked. Nighttime in the Onsen Town: Romance in tranquility As night falls, lanterns light up the old street, creating an atmosphere even more charming than during the day. Strolling in the streets wearing the yukata provided by the inn feels like stepping back in time.
