Bawa Lighthouse Hotel | A Lonely, Disconnected Hotel

| A lonely, disconnected hotel. The overall design of Jetwing Lighthouse gives me a sense of loneliness and disconnect. Loneliness: In this grassy field, a staircase leading to an unknown destination and a lone tree striving to grow within the building remind me of a world from a video game, though I can't quite place which one. It's as if it were an adventure game designed specifically for solitary travelers, facing the vast, gray Indian Ocean, walking alone on life's journey, never knowing where the next step will lead. Perhaps this is the contemplation the design evokes, or maybe it's just my own whimsical imagination. Disconnect: Upon entering the hotel lobby, a grand spiral staircase adorned with sculptures of warriors on horseback catches the eye. The struggling postures and panicked expressions of the sculptures bring to mind the soldiers who stubbornly resisted and defended their homeland during Sri Lanka's colonial period. This starkly contrasts with the five-star resort hotel, a seemingly defiant satire left by Bawa to colonialism. I wonder what tourists from developed countries think when they see this scene, perhaps it doesn't ripple their pleasant travel mood. The battlefield where their ancestors fought to the death hasn't made life better for the people of this land. Though the war has ceased, the reaping of capital continues.
