Kangxi's Imperial Calligraphy, Dongzang Ruiying Temple

Ruiying Temple is located in Fosi Village, Fosi Town, Fuxin Autonomous County, Liaoning Province. It is known as "Gegen Sumu" by the Mongolian people and commonly referred to as Foh Lama Temple. It is a national 4A-level tourist scenic spot and a provincial key cultural relic protection unit. It was first built in the eighth year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1699) and belongs to the Gelug sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It was initially completed in the forty-second year of the Kangxi reign (1703) and is known as "Dongzang". The large plaque of Ruiying Temple, with golden dragon borders and inscriptions in Manchu, Mongolian, Tibetan, and Chinese, was bestowed by Emperor Kangxi. At its peak, the temple housed three thousand lamas. The temple buildings are arranged from south to north, adopting a layout that emphasizes the central structure with auxiliary buildings on both sides, making the primary and secondary structures distinct and harmonious. The design imitates the Potala Palace in Tibet but with certain modifications. It fully embodies the architectural style of Tibetan Buddhist temples that integrate Manchu, Mongolian, Tibetan, and Han elements. The buildings cover an area of more than ten miles in circumference, including the Mahavira Hall, the Prayer Hall, the Nine Ministers' Prayer Hall, and the east and west auxiliary halls. Outside the Mahavira Hall are the Four Great Assemblies, Dedan Queling, and the Living Buddha Hall. Surrounding the main temple are five other temples built on the eastern and western mountain tops or slopes: the White Umbrella Temple on the northeast peak, the Protector Hall on the southeast peak facing north, the Tara Temple on the southwest hilltop, the Guan Yu Temple on the southwest hillside, and the Relic Temple on the northwest peak. The entire temple complex is well-organized, with a clear distinction between primary and secondary structures, an inside-outside reflection, and a unique symmetrical layout on all four sides. It is magnificent and grand, truly a sacred place of Buddhism.
