Jiangxi hides a small and niche thousand-year-old ancient town, which not only has the charm of Jiangnan, but also allows free entry.
Jiangxi is a place full of poetic and picturesque scenery. The local tourism resources are very rich, including the famous Lushan Mountain with its unique and beautiful scenery, Wugong Mountain, a holy land for hiking with stunning views of the sea of clouds, Sanqing Mountain, like a Chinese ink painting, and Huangling, the most beautiful village in China. Many scenic spots are worth visiting, and there are also some overlooked niche travel destinations with their own unique charm. Today, let's take a look at a lesser-known thousand-year-old ancient town in Jiangxi, which retains the original Jiangnan style and is free of charge. It is worth a visit.
This ancient town is Yao Li Ancient Town, located in the eastern part of Fuliang County, Jingdezhen City, Jiangxi Province, at the junction of Qimen, Xiuning, Wuyuan, and Fuliang counties. It is 50 kilometers away from the downtown area of Jingdezhen and Fuliang County. It occupies a very advantageous geographical location and has a history of more than two thousand years. It has been a prosperous commercial port since ancient times. Nowadays, the ancient town is rich in Gan-style architecture and tourism resources, and is known as the "origin of porcelain, hometown of tea, and sea of forests".
Yao Li Ancient Town is named after Jingdezhen porcelain kilns and is one of the origins of ceramic handicrafts. It has a history and culture of more than two thousand years. Nowadays, there are many ancient buildings left behind. Walking on the old streets of the ancient town, you can see the traces left by the years. Stepping on the stone road, it feels like traveling back in time. Wearing ancient costumes to take photos is very picturesque. Not only that, it is also a red relic. Comrade Chen Yi lived here and guided the reorganization work of the New Fourth Army, known as the "Yao Li Reorganization". Now an exhibition hall has been established, which is a red education base for accepting the enlightenment of revolutionary ideology and carrying out revolutionary traditional learning.
Yao Li ancient town is full of exotic Jiangnan style, and the scenery here is intoxicating. We can enjoy steep mountains, green streams, and simple villages. During the day, it is like a landscape in a Chinese ink painting, and at night, the lights are brilliant, with the charm of an ancient town. It is super beautiful for taking photos. The Yao River runs through the town, with clear water and no pollution, slowly flowing down. Surrounding it are ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties and distant mountains, forming a beautiful Jiangnan ink painting, which is very shocking and seems like a fairyland on earth.
In the ancient town, there are various delicious foods and authentic Jiangxi specialties. Whether you taste them locally or give them as gifts, they are all unforgettable. In addition, there is no admission fee to visit Yao Li ancient town, and you can enter and play for free. It is a national four-star scenic spot with complete humanistic landscape, natural scenery, and revolutionary sites, and has high historical and cultural value. In Jiangxi, Yao Li ancient town is a niche travel destination, but its beauty and charm are shocking. The scenery, ancient architecture, and food here are all worth exploring and tasting. It is a great place to check in.

This venue provides many photo opportunities, even better if you’re attired in traditional Chinese costumes. It would be such a lovely day out with your friends to walk the grounds and capture awesome memories together. It’s not far away from the city center of Jungdezhen, so do not miss this when you are there!

China’s Porcelain Capital
China’s City of Porcelain 👇🏻
Venturing into the world of porcelain in Jingdezhen was like stepping into a treasure trove that spoke to my soul! There’s said to be a history of over 2,000 years of porcelain making in Jingdezhen, a city renowned as playing an important role in Chinese porcelain production.
If you’re visiting Jingdezhen, definitely make a stop at these stunning Porcelain Palaces.
Comprised of three circular and one square “tulou”, these architectural structures are covered - literally floor to ceiling - in ceramics of all shapes, colours, sizes and patterns.
Strolling through those ceramic-clad walls, I was struck by the sheer beauty and craftsmanship of it all. It felt like each piece had a story to tell, connecting me to the generations of artisans who poured their hearts into their work.

【Jingdezhen | The azure waiting for the misty rain in the distant ancient town】
Yao Li Scenic Area
The prototype of the azure waiting for the misty rain described by Fang Wenshan is this thousand-year-old ancient town—Yao Li
Compared with the ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River, it has a bit more of ceramic culture, with ancient kilns and crafts everywhere
⏳Recommended visiting time: About 2 hours
🚉Transportation guide: Take a taxi/rent a car from Jingdezhen, taxi fare 100+
👍Most recommended: Taking photos, especially good for pictures~
🌟Highlights: Playing in the water at the fish scale dam~
A very beautiful village, the locals are very friendly, and there are many restaurants along the lake. Passing by, there are also especially cute dogs and ducks.
The daughter wanted to play in the water, bought a water gun, and the water was quite clean. She was overjoyed~
Yao Li Ancient Town | Encountering a misty rain in the azure sky
Encountering a misty rain in the azure sky. Yao Li Ancient Town, a poetic scroll of the misty Jiangnan region
Stepping into Yao Li Ancient Town is like traveling through a tranquil and ancient time and space. Stone-paved roads, ancient dwellings, and small bridges over flowing water, everything is so leisurely and content. What intoxicates people the most is the misty Jiangnan scenery.
Wandering around the Dongbu Wharf, feel the tender and sweet charm of the water town. Watching the flat boat gently swaying, it's as if you can hear it whispering: 'Waiting for the misty rain in the azure sky, and I am waiting for you.' A surge of inexplicable emotion wells up in your heart.
Here, time seems to slow down. There's no need to hurry, no need to be deliberate, just follow your heart and let your thoughts drift. Perhaps, around a certain corner, you will meet yourself in the misty rain, blending with the tranquility of the ancient town, feeling that unique casualness and freedom. Just quietly feel, let the misty rain of Dongbu Wharf, the ink of the azure sky, become the most beautiful scenery in your heart.
Taking photos is also an essential part! Whether it's the antique dwellings or the misty alleys, they are all excellent photographic backgrounds. Remember to wear your most beautiful Hanfu or Cheongsam, and leave the most beautiful memories!
Yaoli Ancient Town is nestled in the beauty of mountains and rivers
In Yaoli, you encounter that shade of 'azure sky' simply because of an unexpected rain. The green waters ripple, and the vegetation is lush, exuding the dripping greenery typical of the south of the Yangtze River. Here, you can meet hundreds of Ming and Qing Dynasty Hui-style buildings, with old houses, ancestral halls, and ancient temples seen everywhere. The sounds of chickens crowing and dogs barking are heard, as you step into the times and stories of the past.
Jingdezhen | Fang Qi was right, Yao Li is indeed stunningly beautiful!
Yao Li, also known as 'Yao Li', is the birthplace of Jingdezhen ceramics, but now it seems that Yao Li Ancient Town has little to do with 'ceramics'. What exists is the 'azure misty rain' described by Fang Wenqing's writings, which is no exaggeration. Just like in Fang Qi's video, it is truly breathtakingly beautiful!!!! 😍
When it rains in Yao Li, a layer of mist envelops the town. Breathing in the mountain air in the early morning is like a spiritual cleansing; I simply do not want to leave. We were pressed for time and left after taking some photos like tourists. If you have more time, you can stay in the ancient town for a few more days. (Food and lodging in the ancient town are very convenient)
📍Location: Yao Li Town, Fuliang County, Jingdezhen City, Jiangxi Province (50 kilometers from Jingdezhen City Center)
🚗Transportation:
1⃣️Most tourists take a chartered car for a day trip along the route from Cigong to Hanxi Village to Yao Li (300-350💰, anything beyond this range is a rip-off, so run away), which is a cost-effective option for group travel.
2⃣️Taking a taxi from Jingdezhen City Center costs 100💰 one way, but it's difficult to hail a taxi back. The only option is to take a bus🚌, with two trips a day, at 14:00 and 19:00, which is quite troublesome. Not recommended❌
🎫Ticket: 🆓, the 150💰 pass mentioned online includes the Wanghu area outside of Yao Li Ancient Town, which is not necessary.
🍜Cuisine: Alkaline water rice cake is a local specialty, reportedly invented by the people of Yao Li during the war years to provide the army with reserves of food that were easy to carry and would not spoil easily.
📚About sightseeing:
1⃣️The ancient town is paved with bluestone slabs, and every place is photogenic, so it's nice to just take a leisurely walk, and you might occasionally encounter some artists sketching.
2⃣️📷For photography, it is recommended to use zoom and telephoto lenses, as the distant landscapes and Hui-style architecture are interspersed and very beautiful.
3⃣️For attire, it is suggested to wear plain-colored dresses or traditional Chinese Hanfu or Qipao, and having a paper umbrella would be even better!

🪘Sculpture Porcelain Factory
No reservation needed, but many stalls start closing after 17:00
Walking forward, you'll find many more shops, each selling similar styles.
It's like a huge market here, selling bracelets, necklaces, rings, teacups, etc. It's dazzling with so much to see.
Bracelets are 10r/3 pieces. That's the price at the small stalls, but it might be different in the shops.
It's like heaven and earth; you simply can't stop your hands. Even if your friend tries to pull you away, you can't resist. Everything looks so good, I really regret not buying more.
I'm so envious of friends in Jingdezhen who can shop here every day.
Definitely worth visiting!!
Hello Jiangxi | Seeking in Jingdezhen.
Seeking in Jingdezhen. Hello Jiangxi | The plain embryo outlines the blue and white, seeking in Jingdezhen.
"The sky blue waits for the rain, and I am waiting for you."
The sky blue on the porcelain can only be achieved when fired in rainy weather.
That touch of ethereal and pure color cannot present itself.
It must patiently wait for a rain that may come at any time.
Only then can it appear in the clear sky after the clouds disperse.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Half of the history of ceramics is in Jingdezhen."
But Jingdezhen is not actually a town.
It is nestled between Jiangxi and Anhui.
Under the undulating hills within its borders, more than 40 kinds of porcelain-making materials are buried.
Thus, it has become a city built on kiln mouths in the truest sense.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here, life is born from porcelain, thrives on porcelain, and is named after porcelain.
Here, "plain porcelain snow color with a faint fragrance," as if the air is filled with the scent of porcelain culture.
Walking into the handcraft workshops nestled in the alleys, you will see artisans meticulously drawing lines.
Or conversing with "porcelain workers" at the Taoxichuan market about ancient porcelain-making techniques.
The pottery born here collectively constructs the world-renowned Chinese cultural symbol—china.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Located on the site of the Imperial Kiln Factory, the Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum
The variously sized linear brick arch structures seem to grow out of the ground.
The architectural lines intertwine with light and shadow, creating a blend of reality and illusion.
The ruins of the old kiln, with its broken walls, are an undying memory passed down through generations.
Here, the art of earth and fire collides, combining local elements with Eastern architectural aesthetics, igniting new vitality in the museum's collection.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the earthly Yaoli, a dream of Fuliang.
Ancient Huizhou-style buildings are nestled among the green mountains and clear waters.
If you are not in a hurry, you can slowly follow the flowing Yaoxi.
Walk and stop.
Feel the gentle tranquility of the water towns in Jiangnan.
Yaoli Ancient Town is like a small town forgotten by time, beautiful in its calm and restraint.
As the birthplace of Jingdezhen ceramics and the namesake of the kaolin used to make ceramics,
Every inconspicuous small piece of porcelain may have hundreds of years of history, embodying profound ceramic culture.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The kiln fire that has burned for thousands of years has nurtured a splendid ceramic culture.
The porcelain capital Jingdezhen has always been here, waiting for you to explore.
The charm of Jiangxi lies in the experience.
Only by coming to Jiangxi can you deeply feel the humanity and poetry of Jiangxi.
Experience the ancient charm and new stories nurtured by the thousand-year-old porcelain capital.

Having just finished this trip, I'm already thinking about the next one, Jingdezhen—I will definitely come back 🥰🥰
Jingdezhen | Fang Qi was right, Yao Li is indeed stunningly beautiful!
