Fatehpur Sikri: The Magnificent Mughal Ghost City

#favouriteitinerary Fatehpur Sikri, located about 37 kilometers from Agra, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most historically significant cities built during the Mughal era. Founded by Emperor Akbar in 1569, Fatehpur Sikri was intended to be the capital of the Mughal Empire, but it was abandoned just 14 years later, due to water scarcity and other logistical issues. The city is an architectural masterpiece, with a mix of Islamic, Persian, and Indian architectural styles. Notable structures within the city include the Buland Darwaza (the grand gateway), the Jama Masjid, the Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audiences), and the Panch Mahal, an intricately designed five-story pavilion. The Tomb of Salim Chishti, located within the complex, is also an important site, drawing pilgrims and visitors alike. Fatehpur Sikri is often referred to as a “ghost city” due to its abandonment, but it remains an extraordinary example of Mughal architecture and an important piece of India’s history. The site’s blend of grand courtyards, palaces, mosques, and tombs offers a glimpse into the imperial lifestyle of the 16th century.

Fatehpur Sikri

Next on the map, we headed to Jama' Masjid in Fatehpur Sikri. The complex was built during Moghul Emperor Abu'l-Fath Jalal ud-din Muhammad Akbar reign in 1571-1575. I love the bricks, calligraphy, the ornamental decorations and just about everything. It reminds so much about the Hindustan film I watched on tv screen. Fatehpur Sikri was the first planned city of the Mughals to be marked by magnificent administrative, residential, and religious buildings comprises of palaces, public buildings, mosques, and living areas for the court, the army, the servants of the king and an entire city. Public is still using this mosque to offer their Friday prayers.
