Dyrham Park

#uktrip Our half-day October visit to Dyrham Park was a highlight of our week-long vacation to the Bath area. The extensive property gave us plenty of exercise and wonderful views wherever we looked -- including several deer on the hill above the walk to the estate. Beyond the initial 15 minute walk from the car park down to the estate (National Trust also offers a free shuttle bus each way), Dyrham Park has several formal paths around ponds, gardens, and the chapel. Capability Brown didn't design this property (it was designed by George London and later Charles Harcourt Masters), but the layout of gardens, trees, ponds, and paths are certainly equal to Brown's accomplishments (IMO). The toddler in our group of five was happy exploring the small atrium area and the bat displays that National Trust created for learning. Two of us also appreciated the small half-hidden path to the classic country chapel and graveyard near the house. The house itself presents interesting rooms, artwork, etc. The tapestries particularly caught my attention, but a few visits are necessary to appreciate the furniture, wall coverings, paintings, ceiling art, and so many other artifacts. There is also an interesting display describing the history of coffee, tea, and cocoa. The cafeteria had good food options (although some ran out before we arrived) with rustic picnic tables outdoors and plenty of comfortable tables indoors. Note that you exit at the far end of the car park. Also, A46 can be jam packed at the end of the day. Travelled in late October 2024
