What can the rich really do for society? Bangladesh offers an answer

In the last century, Bangladesh had its ups and downs, from colonization to finally gaining independence, every individual would be involved, but this does not prevent the birth of great figures, and Ranada Prasad Saha is such a legendary person. Born in 1896 by the Lauhajang River in the village of Mirzapur, in an ordinary family, Saha lost his mother to illness at the age of 7, which had a profound impact on him. At 16, he went to West Bengal in India, making a living in Kolkata as a tea boy and peddler. After the outbreak of World War I, Saha joined the British mercenary army as a medical soldier. By 1932, he started a coal business in Kolkata and made his first fortune with the help of river transportation. Six years later, he established a charitable hospital in his hometown and named it Kumudini after his mother. In 1944, he donated 250,000 BDT to the Red Cross, which was an astronomical sum at the time. In 1947, Saha put all his companies into a trust fund named Kumudini Welfare Trust (KWT), with the income from businesses such as jute baling and river transport used for welfare and charity. Today, the Saha family's industries span jute, garment, pharmaceuticals, river transport, and more, continuously giving back to society. His hospital charges almost nothing for patients, with minimally invasive surgery costing 1 USD, a cap of 45 USD for surgery fees, and no charge for hospital stays; his women's medical college charges about 70 USD per month, including tuition, accommodation, canteen, and all other expenses. The legendary Mr. Saha had one son and two daughters. In May 1971, he and his son were abducted by the West Pakistani army and vanished from the face of the earth. Fortunately, the Saha family's business remained private, and today his grandson manages the vast trust fund, continuing to give back to society. His granddaughter studied in the UK.
