Henan|Dengfeng． Songyang Academy: A model of ancient academy architecture This ancient Chinese institution of higher learning is located at the foot of Junji Peak in Dengfeng City, Henan Province. It was first built in the eighth year of Taihe in the Northern Wei Dynasty (484 AD) and was originally named Songyang Temple. It is a Buddhist temple. In the second year of Song Jingxiu's reign (1035), Taishi Academy was rebuilt and renamed Songyang Academy. Songyang Academy is one of the birthplaces of Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism in the Song Dynasty. Its architectural style is a "specimen" for studying ancient Chinese academy architecture, education system and Confucian culture. The architectural layout of Songyang Academy maintains that of the Qing Dynasty. There are more than 500 existing halls and corridors. The central axis building is divided into five courtyards. From south to north, they are the main gate, the Temple of the Sage, the lecture hall, the Daotong Temple and the library. The auxiliary rooms on both sides of the central axis are all hard-roofed buildings, including the Cheng-Zhu Temple, the Lize Hall, the Boyue Studio, the Stele Gallery, etc. There are 26 Qing Dynasty buildings with 108 rooms preserved. On June 25, 2001, Songyang Academy was announced as the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units. On August 1, 2010, the Dengfeng Tiandi historical building complex, including Songyang Academy, was listed as a World Cultural Heritage.
