Strolling through Delft feels like stepping into a Dutch Golden Age painting, with its cobblestone streets, picturesque canals, and historic buildings creating an atmosphere of timeless beauty. Known for its iconic blue-and-white ceramics, Johannes Vermeer’s artistic legacy, and its deep connection to the Dutch royal family, Delft is a perfect blend of history, culture, and charm. As I wandered through the old town, I was captivated by the stunning architecture of the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), where Dutch royalty has been laid to rest for centuries. The Markt square was buzzing with activity, lined with charming cafés, boutique shops, and, of course, stalls selling traditional Delftware pottery. The Oude Kerk (Old Church), with its signature leaning tower, added even more character to the city’s historic skyline. One of the most delightful surprises was spotting a horse-drawn carriage trotting down the street, a rare and charming sight that made the city feel even more like a storybook setting. The rhythmic clip-clop of hooves on the cobblestones added to the quaint, old-world ambiance, reminding me of Delft’s past as a bustling trade center. A visit to Royal Delft, the last remaining factory producing handmade Delft Blue pottery, was a highlight, showcasing the centuries-old craftsmanship that makes this city famous worldwide.
