A Unique Mediaeval Sugar Factory in Jordan

A well-preserved mediaeval sugar production site that reflects a time when sugar was a highly valued commodity and a significant economic driver in the region. The archaeological site known as Tawahin as-Sukkar (meaning "sugar mills" in Arabic) is located near the Jordanian town of Ghawr as-Safi, 5 km east to the border with Israel and 30 km south to the Dead Sea. Finds at the site suggest the presence of human settlement for several different historical eras, including the Early Bronze, Byzantine, and late Islamic Periods. Tawahin as-Sukkar is known for its historical sugarcane factory dating back to the 11th century. It is believed that locally produced sugar was sold throughout the world and sugar is considered to have been the "cash crop" during the mediaeval period. #2024wish
