[World Heritage Site: Yungang Grottoes]

The Yungang Grottoes, a World Heritage Site in Datong City, Shanxi Province, is one of China's three great caves (the others are the Mogao Grottoes and the Longmen Grottoes). The caves were carved over a period of about 30 years, from 460 to 494, before the Northern Wei Dynasty moved its capital to Xianyang, and the atmosphere has a somewhat Persian feel to it. The Buddha statues are mainly arranged in a single statue at the front and two on the left and right. However, the walls are wonderful and hundreds of Buddhas are carved.
