Yanmenguan Scenic Area

Yanmenguan is located in Yanmen Mountain, about 20 kilometers north of Daixian County, Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province, China. It is an important pass on the Great Wall, known for its danger, and is known as the 'First Pass of China'. During the Warring States Period, Li Mu was ordered to stay in Yanmenguan to guard against the Huns and prevent the Huns from harassing the border people of Zhao. After Qin Shihuang unified the six countries, he sent the general Meng Tian to lead 300,000 troops from Yanmenguan to drive the Huns to the north of Yinshan, and built the Great Wall. Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty ordered the repair of Yanmenguan, and famous generals such as Wei Qing, Huo Qubing, and Li Guang had galloped inside and outside the ancient pass of Yanmenguan, repeatedly defeating the Huns and making great contributions. During the reign of Emperor Yuan of Han, Wang Zhaojun was married from Yanmenguan. The name of Yanmenguan began in the early Tang Dynasty. In the early Northern Song Dynasty, the area around Yanmenguan was a fiercely contested battlefield between Song and Liao. The patriotic general Yang Ye and his Yang family generals have all shown their talents here and made contributions to the country. In 2001, Yanmenguan was announced by the State Council of the People's Republic of China as one of the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
