Curacao was discovered by Spanish explorers in 1499 and was subsequently occupied by countries such as the Netherlands, Britain and France. In 1634, Curacao was occupied by the Dutch and gradually developed into a slave trade center. In 1863, slavery was abolished in the Netherlands. Curaçao has undergone a number of political and social changes, including participation in the Venezuelan and Colombian wars of independence.
