This ancient city, located at the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka and built on rocks, was once a military fortress and still retains its artillery. Portuguese and Dutch colonial-style buildings can be seen everywhere, revealing the old colonial atmosphere everywhere. The mottled city wall is not only a witness to the changes in Galle during the colonial period, but also protected the entire ancient city in the 2004 South Asian tsunami; the tall clock tower has been in use for more than 400 years and is still quite accurate; at the other end of the ancient city, a white lighthouse stands by the sea, providing guidance for passing ships.
