The Great 816 Project

The 816 Project site is located in Baitao Subdistrict, Fuling District, Chongqing, close to the Wujiang River and backed by the Wuling Mountains. In 1966, the project was approved by the Central Military Commission and Premier Zhou Enlai. It took 8 years to dig the tunnels and 9 years to install the equipment, with a total investment of CNY 746 million. More than 60,000 people participated in the construction, which went through four stages: rapid construction, slow construction, suspension of construction, and conversion to civilian use. In 1984, the project was suspended due to national strategic adjustments. 🔶The scenic area is very suitable for hiking, taking nearly three hours to walk the whole way. The first spectacular sight in the scenic area is the iron cable suspension bridge that passes through the mountain. Walking across the bridge feels like walking in the sky, which is quite shocking. After that, you will go all the way down the mountain to the canyon crevice, where the towering canyons on both sides form a narrow sky. Qingfeng Gorge crevice is even more beautiful, and at certain times, light will shine in, which is amazing.
