Luohan Temple is located in Yuzhong District. It was built during the Northern Song Dynasty (1064–1067) and was originally called Zhiping Temple. It was named after the Luohan Cave. The "Shuzhong Famous Scenic Spots" records: "Zhiping Temple... has two ancient caves, Luohan and Xiantian." In 1752, the front hall collapsed and was rebuilt as the Dragon God Temple. It was later known as Luohan Temple and Gufoyan. Luohan Temple is like an elder who has experienced a thousand years of wind and rain, standing alone in the world. It silently watches the changes of the city with a peaceful and quiet gaze. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, Luohan Temple was bombed by Japanese planes, and the temple was reduced to ashes, leaving only the Great Mountain Gate and the ancient Buddha rock carvings. However, more than 20 brave monks were not afraid of the Japanese artillery fire and resolutely began the road to reconstruction in the ruins. By 1947, under the leadership of Master Zongxian, the main hall, the Sutra Collection Building, the Luohan Hall, and the mountain gate archway were restored to their former glory. On May 1, 1986, Luohan Temple ushered in another grand event in its thousand-year history. After two years of careful reconstruction, the Luohan Hall once again shone brightly. The temple's dojo is inherited from the Eighth Patriarch Zen Dojo Mazu Daoyi, also known as Mazu Dojo. Mazu fully integrated the unique charm of Zen Buddhism into daily life, advocating "following the heart as practice" and "sudden enlightenment," believing that the mind is the Buddha, neither mind nor Buddha, and that an ordinary mind is the way. This concept broke through the self-indulgence and fatigue of practitioners and redirected Zen to reality. The goal of Zen practice is not asceticism, but the extremely optimistic "happy way" of life, allowing Zen to perfectly integrate with wisdom and life. The black gate of the temple is like a watershed between two worlds. Outside the gate, there are tall buildings, busy traffic, and bustling crowds; inside the gate, there are morning bells and evening drums, tranquility, and peace. Luohan Temple is a kind of persistent perseverance in Chongqing, like a hard reef in the heart, standing firm like Mount Tai amidst the waves and flowers. It is not to stop people from moving forward, but to reveal the profound meaning of temporarily stopping and resting in life to passersby.
