How to Use Public Transport in China

#chinatransit : A Friendly Guide for Travelers If you’re planning a trip to China, get ready for an adventure—because navigating its public transport is an experience in itself! But don’t worry, it’s easier than it looks. Whether you’re hopping on the metro, catching a bus, hailing a taxi, or using Didi (China’s Uber), I’ve got you covered with some super handy tips. ⸻ 1. Metro (Subway) – The Easiest and Fastest Way 🚇 China’s metro system is fast, clean, and super efficient—perfect for avoiding traffic jams in big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Most metro signs and announcements are in both Chinese and English, so it’s pretty tourist-friendly. How to use the metro: ✔️ Get a transport card – The easiest way to pay is with a local metro card (like the Beijing Yikatong or Shanghai Public Transport Card) or by using Alipay/WeChat Pay. ✔️ Buy single tickets – If you’re not staying long, you can just buy a one-time ticket at the machines (cash or digital payment accepted). ✔️ Use navigation apps – Apps like Baidu Maps, Amap, or MetroMan will help you find routes in English. Google Maps? Not so reliable in China! 🛑 Tip: Avoid peak hours (7-9 AM & 5-7 PM), or you’ll experience “sardine mode”—especially in Beijing and Shanghai! ⸻ 2. Buses – Cheap but a Bit Tricky 🚌 Buses in China are super affordable, but they can be confusing for first-timers. They’re great if you want to explore local neighborhoods that the metro doesn’t reach. How to use buses in China: ✔️ Have exact change – Most buses don’t give change, so keep some small bills or coins. A typical fare is ¥1-2 ($0.15-$0.30). ✔️ Use an app – Baidu Maps or Amap can show you bus routes, stops, and even real-time arrivals. ✔️ Scan to pay – Many buses allow payments via Alipay or WeChat Pay (just scan the QR code when you board). 🛑 Tip: Some cities have double-decker sightseeing buses, which are a fun and cheap way to explore! ⸻ 3. Taxis – Convenient but Watch Out! 🚕 Taxis are everywhere in China, but finding an honest driver can be a challenge in tourist areas. Some might refuse to use the meter, so be cautious. How to get a taxi without hassle: ✔️ Always ask for the meter – Say “Dǎ biǎo” (打表) to ensure they use it. ✔️ Have your destination written in Chinese – Many drivers don’t speak English. Show your location on Baidu Maps or have a screenshot ready. ✔️ Avoid taxis at train stations/airports – These drivers often overcharge. Use Didi instead (see below). 🛑 Tip: In major cities, green taxis are usually more reliable than red ones! ⸻ 4. Didi – China’s Uber & The Best Way to Get Around 🚗 If dealing with taxis sounds like a headache, just use Didi! It’s China’s version of Uber, and it’s super convenient, safe, and affordable. How to use Didi as a foreigner: ✔️ Download the Didi app (English version available!) ✔️ Sign up with your phone number ✔️ Link a payment method – You can use a foreign credit card or Alipay
