Wat Chiang Man is a temple located on Ratchaphakinai Road, Tambon Si Phum, Amphoe Mueang Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai Province. There are Phra Setangkamani (White Buddha) and Phra Sila, which is a Buddha statue in the posture of subduing the elephant Nalagiri, enshrined in the temple. It has a long history, appearing in the local legend of Chiang Mai and the Yonok Chronicle. After Phraya Ngam Mueang, Phraya Ruang, and Phraya Mangrai established Chiang Mai in 1839, all three of them ordered the construction of a pagoda, and Phraya Mangrai temporarily resided there while supervising the construction of the city at the dormitory of Ban Chiang Man, called "Wiang Kaew". He dedicated the palace of Khum Luang Wiang Lek to be the first royal temple and named it "Wat Chiang Man". It is believed that the pagoda collapsed during the reign of King Tilokarat (reigned 1985 - 2031), so he ordered the construction of a new pagoda. Made of laterite in 2014 When Chiang Mai became a colony of Burma in 2094, Wat Chiang Man was abandoned until 2101 when Prince Mangtra (Somdet Phra Maha Thammakarachathirat) of Burma restored Wat Chiang Man again by ordering the construction of a chedi, a viharn, an ordination hall, a library, a Thammasenasana wall, and a gate of Khong. Phra Maha Hinthatitchawangsa was the abbot during the reign of Phraya Kawila of Chiang Mai (2324–2358). Later, Buddhism in the Thammayut sect spread to the Lanna Kingdom.
