Thailand's Chiang Mai 500-Year-Old Ancient Temple: Wat Lok Moli

Located on the northern edge of Chiang Mai's old city, near the moat, Wat Lok Moli dates back to the early 14th century. After exiting the north gate and crossing the road, a short walk west will lead you to this unique temple. Unlike the typical golden and ornate Thai temples, Wat Lok Moli features striking blue and white structures. At the entrance, two tall and majestic guardian statues stand watch, while inside, you'll find two pure white elephant statues on the left. Further in, there's a black temple and an ancient stupa with a rich historical ambiance. Architectural Features: The temple's entrance is an intricately carved archway, while the main hall showcases a Lanna-style design with overlapping roofs, constructed primarily from teak wood. The architecture exudes a strong Southeast Asian aesthetic. The stupa is built with red bricks and adorned with exquisite wood carvings, murals, and Buddha statues. At the stupa's entrance, visitors can light a colorful lantern to pray for blessings for themselves and their families. In front of the stupa, there is a basin of pure holy water. You can pour the water into a bamboo tube connected to a pulley system, sending it to the Buddha statue at the top of the stupa. Sprinkling the water and praying for peace is believed to bring protection and blessings. Inside the temple, there is a statue of 'Jiraprabha Mahadevi,' known as the Lanna Goddess of Love. It is said that praying to her can fulfill love-related wishes, whether it's finding a soulmate, maintaining a stable and lasting relationship, or wishing for children. Photography Tips: - Before 8:00 AM: Capture the serene main hall with soft lighting and fewer crowds. - After 5:00 PM: Photograph the stupa under the golden glow of the setting sun, with moss shimmering in the light. - Use a lantern as a prop during twilight, walking under the archway for a stunning atmospheric shot. - Wear white or beige long dresses to create a natural contrast with the red bricks and green moss. Important Notes: - Shoes must be removed before entering the temple, so wear footwear that is easy to take off. - Avoid wearing revealing clothing.
