Tha Phae Gate, a significant landmark of Chiang Mai, is located on the east side and is one of the five inner city gates of Wiang Chiang Mai. It is currently the only city gate that still has a door. ✅📣 Tha Phae Gate was formerly known as Chiang Rueak Gate. The name originated from this gate leading to the pier of the Ping River, where there were many rafts. It served as a passageway for the rulers of that time and was also a trading and exchange point. It was first built during the reign of King Mangrai when Chiang Mai was established in 1296. However, the Tha Phae Gate we see today was rebuilt in 1985 by the Chiang Mai Municipality and the Fine Arts Department, based on historical and archaeological evidence, including a photograph of one of Chiang Mai's city gates taken in 1879. The highlight of this gate, besides taking beautiful photos, is the Tha Phae Walking Street, the largest walking street in Chiang Mai, which takes place every Sunday. Here, you can shop for a variety of goods, including food, utilities, souvenirs, especially local and handmade products. The walking street starts from Tha Phae Gate and extends to Wat Phra Singh.
