Doi Luang Chiang Dao, Chiang Mai

Doi Chiang Dao or Doi Luang Chiang Dao is the third highest mountain in Thailand, after Doi Inthanon and Doi Pha Hom Pok. It is located in Chiang Dao District, Chiang Mai Province, with an elevation of 2,275 meters (7,136 feet) above sea level. In the past, it was called "Doi Ang Slung". According to local legend, it is the place where the Lord Buddha came with 8 Arahants to bathe in the golden pond or Ang Slung area. Therefore, this mountain was called "Doi Luang" because it was very large ("Luang" in northern language means "big"). It was distorted to "Doi Luang Phiang Dao" (Doi Luang Piang Dao in northern language) and became "Doi Luang Chiang Dao" or "Doi Chiang Dao" today.
