Ancient Sichuan: From the Jin Dynasties to the Tang and Five Dynasties

This exhibition unit begins in 263 AD, when the state of Wei conquered Shu, and ends in 965 AD, when the Later Shu was conquered by the Song. It is divided into two units: the Jin Dynasties and the Southern and Northern Dynasties, and the Sui, Tang, and Five Dynasties. In this exhibition, which spans 700 years and features 280 cultural relics (sets), visitors can trace the prosperity of Chengdu a thousand years ago, and a picture of the collision and integration of diverse cultures unfolds. During the Sui, Tang, and Five Dynasties, Sichuan was stable and prosperous, and merchants and travelers gathered in the area. Chengdu, a thousand-year-old city, became one of the most prosperous cities in the country in the late Tang Dynasty, and was known as "Yangzhou first, Yizhou second" along with Yangzhou. The "Yuanhe County Map" of the Tang Dynasty records that "Yangzhou and Chengdu are known for their prosperity and luxury, so they are called Yang and Yi." Material abundance led to higher spiritual pursuits. Sichuan has been a land of outstanding people since ancient times, and its stable and superior environment attracted a large number of northern scholars to take refuge in Shu. During this period, Sichuan's culture and education flourished, with Buddhist music, poetry, and prose, as well as wine and tea. In addition, the exhibition also features the tomb of Wang Jian, the first scientifically excavated imperial tomb in China and the only above-ground imperial tomb in China.
