It was the model for the live-action film Beauty and the Beast. It was conceived by Leonardo da Vinci and built for Francis I. It is the largest and most impressive castle in the Loire Valley, and is a representative example of French Renaissance architecture. It is said that Francis I was impressed by the splendor of Renaissance art during his Italian expedition and decided to build a castle incorporating that architectural style after returning home.
