A Step Back in Time: Grandparents' Flavors in Taichung

#newyearnewtrip #travelanywhere Tucked away in the heart of Taichung’s Central District, 古早味三代肉粥 (Gu Zao Wei San Dai Rou Zhou) feels like a place frozen in time. The moment you step in, it’s as if you’ve entered a different era—one where life was simpler, and meals were cooked with patience and heart. The decor, untouched for decades, is a quiet reminder of the past, with faded signboards, wooden stools, and the kind of unpolished charm that only time can create. It’s the kind of place your grandparents might have taken you to, or even the kind they might have once owned. And then, there’s the food. Nothing extravagant, nothing overly refined—just simple, honest flavors that feel like home. The star of the menu is their Taiwanese-style porridge, particularly their signature oyster porridge, delicately briny and soothing. To go with it, a spread of traditional side dishes: tender braised pork belly, crispy fried tofu, golden-fried squid, plump Taiwanese sausages, and a variety of innards for those who appreciate the full experience. Everything is freshly prepared, cooked with a kind of effortlessness that comes only from years of repetition and an unwavering commitment to tradition. The elderly couple running the shop welcome customers with the kind of warmth that makes you feel like a regular, even if it’s your first time. They don’t see many tourists here—this is a locals’ spot, a place where people come not for novelty but for something familiar, something that tastes like the meals they grew up with. There’s a quiet, unspoken appreciation in the air, as if everyone dining here understands that they’re experiencing something rare—food that hasn’t changed to chase trends, food that simply is what it has always been. Compared to the extravagant meals we’ve had on this Taiwan trip, this one doesn’t scream for attention. It doesn’t top the charts in terms of bold flavors or indulgence. And yet, it holds a place of its own, one that lingers long after the meal is over. This isn’t just about taste—it’s about memory, about warmth, about that indescribable feeling of being transported back to a time when food was made with love and nothing more.
