Travel Memories | The Edzná Mayan Ruins in Mexico Worth Visiting

Mexico's La zona arqueológica de Edzná is 54 kilometers from Campeche, a 50-minute drive. The main building is majestic, with few tourists, and the visitor center at the entrance of the site is under renovation, preparing for the influx of visitors after the opening of the Maya Train. The Great Pyramid of Edzná stands 40 meters tall and can be climbed. The name Edzná may derive from 'itzna', which in the Mayan language means 'the home of the Itzá people'. Between the 9th and 11th centuries AD, the Itzá family ruled this Mayan city, and the Mayans living outside the city referred to its inhabitants as 'the Itzá people'. This ancient Mayan city, built around 600 BC and with a history of 2,000 years, reached its urban development peak in the Late Classic period, with a large number of majestic buildings that integrated various Mayan styles such as Peten, Chenes, and Puuc. From around the 5th century AD, Edzná gradually developed into an important Mayan capital on the western Yucatán Peninsula, with its rule extending over 25 kilometers.
