Lunar New Year Trip to Northern Xinjiang, Day 4: Hemu Village on Lunar New Year's Eve

January 28, Lunar New Year's Eve. We had a hearty breakfast at the hotel restaurant, enjoying the snowy mountain view through the large windows. After breakfast, we spent the day exploring the village. The weather was pleasant and sunny, a welcome change compared to the later visits to Kanas and Baihaba. Our first stop was the birch forest. Tete and I had a blast skiing on the slopes within the forest. The snow was thick, providing a perfect backdrop for some photos of my wife. After a while, we headed towards Hemu Bridge. The village is home to many dogs, perhaps accustomed to the constant flow of tourists and their offerings of food. They were all very friendly, posing for photos and allowing people to pet them, often earning treats in return. Adorned with red hats and scarves against the snowy landscape, they made for excellent photo subjects. We strolled along, playing with the dogs, occasionally lying down on the snow-covered ground. From Hemu Bridge, the river stretched out on both sides, its icy surface blanketed in snow, winding through the dark forest towards the distant snow-capped mountains. The expansive view brought a sense of peace and tranquility. Crossing the bridge, we descended to the riverbank on the right side, near the forest. The river was frozen solid, covered with a thick layer of snow. Two beautiful dogs followed us playfully. After some time by the river, we ventured deeper into the forest towards the Hemu viewing platform. Halfway up the mountain, we paused to take in the panoramic view. The surrounding mountains and forests enveloped the small village, creating a scene reminiscent of a childhood fairytale. The path to the viewing platform was a continuous uphill climb. Along the way, we saw people in UGG-style snow boots struggling and occasionally tumbling down. Checking the time, we descended the mountain and drove to the sunset viewing platform. The sunset viewing platform was essentially a steep hillside. We carefully climbed up, using both hands and feet. The small platform at the top was crowded with people. From this vantage point, we had a clear view of the entire village. Around 6 or 7 p.m., a bluish hue settled over the scene. The three of us took some photos and selfies. We slid down the hill on our way back. After watching the bonfire for a while, we returned to the hotel. We sliced some purchased braised meat and fruit, prepared instant hot pot, and arranged some snacks, ready to celebrate our Lunar New Year's Eve.
