A Glimpse into the Old Town of Suzhou - Pingjiang Road

Pingjiang Road is a historic street in Suzhou, where the old appearance of the district has been preserved. By comparing the current map with the 'Map of Pingjiang', it is clear that the existing streets, rivers, bridges, and the recorded conditions in the historic district of Pingjiang are generally consistent. This shows that for nearly eight hundred years, the area has basically maintained and continued the urban pattern since the Tang and Song dynasties. It is the most completely preserved area of the ancient city of Suzhou to date, and can be called a miniature of the old city. 🌈Highlights: The main street of the district is a small path along the river, with alleys on both the east and west sides, such as Xuanqiao Lane, Daru Lane, Zhongzhangjia Lane, Daxinqiao Lane, etc. Especially on the east side, there are several water lanes preserved, with water and land routes parallel and river streets adjacent, which is very characteristic of the water towns in the south of the Yangtze River. The city rivers, city walls, water lanes, small bridges, old houses, archways, ancient wells, ancient trees, gardens, guild halls, temples, and other elements in the district form a series of vivid three-dimensional paintings. The houses along the river on the main street have mostly been transformed into teahouses, souvenir shops, coffee shops, and other businesses, but they look unobtrusive, resembling residential houses. Although there are many tourists, it does not feel noisy. There are far fewer people on the outskirts of the district and in the alleys, which are very quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The natural traces of the years revealed at the corners of the riverbanks are the true charm and soul of the old street.
