Saltstream, Arctic Norway

Salt, which has existed for about two to three thousand years, is located about 10 kilometers southeast of Bodø in Nordland County in the Arctic region of Norway. It is a very small strait and is famous for having the strongest currents in the world. The narrow strait will lead directly to the Saltfjord in the Norwegian Sea, connecting to the Skjestadfjord between the islands of Stramja and Knapland. Salt has one of the strongest tidal currents in the world, which is created when the tide tries to fill up the Skjestad Fjord. The difference between sea level and the inner fjords can be up to 1 meter. As much as 400 million cubic meters of seawater passes through this 3-kilometer-long, 150-meter-wide strait every 6 hours. When the water flow is strongest, whirlpools with a diameter of up to 10 meters and a depth of up to 5 meters are formed. The maximum tidal current can reach 40 kilometers per hour. The remains of a 10,000-year-old hunter settlement around the Saltstream Stream are the oldest known human settlement in Bodø and one of the oldest archaeological finds in Norway. These hunters have lived at the edge of the ice since ancient times, attracted by the large numbers of fish brought together by strong currents.
