On the way to the crater lake, we happened to pass by a church attraction: Skálholt Cathedral (Skálholtsdómkirkja) (Skalholt Cathedral). The church was destroyed by volcanic eruptions and earthquakes in the 18th century. The church you see now was rebuilt in 1963 and is the tenth cathedral on the site. The cathedral has 25 stained glass windows and a small exhibition of the National Museum in the basement, which displays objects unearthed at Skálholt. In ancient times, Skálholt was the richest, most populous and most influential settlement in Iceland.
