Biei – Rolling Hills and Painted Fields in Hokkaido’s Heartland

#cityplaybook #familytrip #localguides #stunningview Post: If Hokkaido had a canvas, it would be Biei—a land of gentle hills, patchwork flower fields, and winding country roads. This rural gem in central Hokkaido is known for its breathtaking seasonal landscapes, especially in spring and summer, when the fields burst into vibrant color. I began my visit at the famous Patchwork Road, where every turn revealed waves of green, gold, and purple stretching into the distance. The countryside felt alive and ever-changing. Iconic trees like the Ken and Mary Tree and the Seven Stars Tree stand like sentinels in the fields—each with its own story, each offering perfect photo ops. One of the highlights was cycling through the Panorama Road area. The views were vast, with Mt. Tokachi rising in the distance, and the air was fresh with the scent of earth and flowers. It’s quiet out here—just the wind, the hum of bees, and the rustle of wheat fields. I also visited the surreal Blue Pond (Aoiike), a luminous, milky turquoise pool surrounded by bare trees. It looked like something out of a dream, especially when the light shifted and reflected the sky. Lunch was at a local farm café—homemade butter, fresh vegetables, and soft bread, all from nearby fields. Simple, wholesome, and absolutely delicious. Best Time to Visit: June to August for full bloom and color, or October for golden autumn hues. Winter is serene and snowy, especially around the Blue Pond. Helpful Tips: Rent a bike or car to explore freely—public transport is limited. Sunrise and sunset bring the softest light for photography. Stop at Shikisai-no-Oka, a flower farm with panoramic views and seasonal fields.
