Greystone Mansion was built by the oil baron Edward L. Dohney Sr at a cost of $3.1 milion for his son Edward ' Ned' Dohney Jr as a wedding gift in 1914. It was not to be a happy family home though as on February 16, 1929, just four months after Ned Doheny, his wife Lucy and their five children moved into Greystone, Ned died in his bedroom in a murder-suicide with his secretary, Hugh Plunket. Ever since Plunket murdered Ned rumours have dogged the story was it because Planket was angry for not having recieved a raise? Was it a lovers quarrel? Or did a jealous wife kill the lovers? We will never know for sure. Today it's owned by the City of Beverly Hills and frequently rented out to shoot movies, TV shows and music videos. The black and white checkered floor has starred in everything from The Muppets to There Will Be Blood, The Social Network, The Bodyguard, X-Men, Witches of Eastwick, Ghostbusters, Spiderman II, National Treasure II, and The Prestige. If a movie calls for shots of a rich non-British villain’s home then Greystone will pop up. Once you have been here, you will start to recognize it next time you are at the movies! Although you cannot go inside the house, you can peak through the windows at the black and white checkered floor and wander the beautiful grounds.
