German Eagle's Nest

The Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) is located above the town of Berchtesgaden, on a ridge on the Eagle's Nest Mountain at an altitude of 1,834 meters. It is a sub-peak of the Hochgol, which is 2,522 meters above sea level. From here you can clearly see the entrance to the King's Lake at the foot of the mountain. The Eagle's Nest was funded by the German Nazi Party and commissioned by Martin Bormann, head of the Nazi Party's Chancellor's Office, in the summer of 1937. It took 13 months to complete. Hitler first visited it on September 16, 1938, and returned to inaugurate it on April 20, 1939, his 50th birthday, although it was not intended as a birthday present. The Eagle's Nest is located several miles above the Berghof, Hitler's summer residence, which was demolished in 1952. The time Hitler spent here was second only to the Wolf's Lair, his headquarters during the invasion of the Soviet Union. In a rare diplomatic engagement, Hitler received the outgoing French ambassador André-François Ponce here on October 18, 1938. It was he who coined the name "Eagle's Nest" for the building and later described the experience, which has become the common name for the building. On June 3, 1944, a wedding reception was held here after Grete, the sister of Hitler's mistress Eva Braun, married Hermann Fegelein.
