Recently, the "Dianxi Yiben: Traditional Shadow Puppets and Contemporary Art Special Exhibition" was grandly opened at the Nanchizi Art Museum in Beijing. This exhibition aims to explore the profound connection between contemporary art and traditional non-heritage culture. Shadow puppets and paper-cutting, as the two pillars of traditional Chinese folk art, have a profound heritage. Shadow puppets use light to create shadows and perform the various states of the world, while paper-cutting uses scissors to depict shapes and tell stories of ancient and modern love and hatred. Both come to life when encountering light and shadow. The exhibition invited more than ten contemporary artists and three generations of non-heritage inheritors, inspired by shadow puppets and paper-cutting, to extract the core genes of traditional art. Through contemporary art forms such as painting, sculpture, and installation, they engage in a dialogue across time and space in the garden art museum. With the help of traditional architecture and garden landscapes, they further explore the inheritance and transformation of tradition and contemporary. Every step we take from here will open up a new space that originates from tradition.
