The park was first established during the Liao Dynasty as the "Golden Sea" and was expanded and renovated during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties to become the imperial garden. In 1925, Beihai Park was officially opened to the public. Beihai was first developed during the Dading period of the Jin Dynasty (1179) and was known as Xihua Pond. It was renamed Taiye Pond during the Yuan Dynasty. The "sea" in Beihai is related to the rule of the Mongols during the Yuan Dynasty. The Mongols referred to lakes as "seas". When the Mongols ruled the Central Plains and established their capital in Beijing, they brought their lifestyle and culture with them. From then on, lakes in Beijing were referred to as "seas", and this term was later shortened to "sea".
