San Guan Pavilion Overpass Building｜Qing Dynasty Yellow Glazed Roof, Exquisite Architecture, Historical Witness

On Liuliqu Street in Liuliqu Village, Mentougou, Beijing, there is a famous building with a yellow glazed roof, the San Guan Pavilion Overpass Building. This is the only Qing Dynasty overpass building in Beijing with a yellow glazed roof, and it is well-preserved to this day, serving as a physical model of modern architectural glazed decoration art. The overpass building was built in the 21st year of Qianlong (1756), supported by Zhao Bangqing, the then kiln master of the official kiln. The building is exquisitely crafted, with unique glazed ridge decorations, witnessing the history of local glazed production. It was announced as a "Beijing Cultural Protection" in 1990. In feudal society, except for royal buildings and temples, the use of yellow glazed tiles was not allowed for the common people. However, Liuliqu Village had the management institution of the Qing Dynasty glazed factory and also produced glazed tiles, so it was granted permission to use yellow glazed tiles by imperial decree. 🌈Highlights: ✅ The overpass building is oriented east-west, built with bricks and stones. The archway is 10 meters deep, 3 meters wide, and 3.5 meters high. Glazed plaques are set above the east and west arch doors, each with a plaque. The west plaque reads "Lishan," and the east plaque reads "Daihe." ✅ There are three halls on the city platform of the overpass building, enshrining Wenchang and the Three Officials (Heaven Official, Earth Official, Water Official) to eliminate disasters. In the middle of the ridge on the gate tower, there is a yellow and green glazed treasure elephant, carrying a treasure vase on its back, symbolizing "peace and prosperity." Every year on the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month, the building is decorated with colorful lanterns, hence it is also called "Lantern Pavilion." ✅ After the establishment of the glazed kiln factory in Liuliqu Village, the kiln fire has been passed down for more than 700 years, which is rare both domestically and internationally. Its glazed works are unique in terms of craftsmanship, glaze, raw materials, and modeling, making it a unique treasure of China. ✅ The glazed bricks, tiles, and decorative pieces used in the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, imperial tombs, and every major renovation and reconstruction were mostly fired by the Liuliqu kiln. There are more than 20 ancient overpass buildings in Mentougou District, among which the two most famous ones are located on the ancient road of western Beijing.
