During the Yuan Dynasty, a glazed tile kiln was established here. After the capital was moved to Beijing during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty, an official glazed tile factory was set up here to produce five-colored glazed tiles and other glazed products. During the Qing Dynasty, Liulichang became a popular spot for literati and gradually developed into a marketplace for cultural goods such as the Four Treasures of the Study, rare books, rubbings of inscriptions, and antique paintings and calligraphy. In the Republic of China period, Liulichang was divided into East Street and West Street. East Street mainly focused on the Four Treasures of the Study and antiques, attracting a large number of cultural figures and scholars.
