The Hospital of the Holy Cross and Saint Paul was expanded with donations from the wealthy Barcelona banker Pau Gil, built between 1901-1930. The original site was a pilgrim's hospital from the 11th century, which was transformed into the 'Hospital of the Holy Cross' in 1401, following the merger of six medieval hospitals, and has always been known as 'the palace of the poor'. Until June 2009, it was continuously used as a hospital, after which it was converted into a museum and cultural center. The work of the Catalan modernist architects Lluís Domènech i Montaner (the master of modernist architecture and teacher of Gaudí) and his son, it was included in the World Heritage List in 1997. The hospital's main hall faces the entrance, with marble columns supporting a continuous dome, and the gentle pink color is a delightful surprise. Not just the hall, many rooms have ceilings decorated with warm, vivid, and rich Moorish-style decorations, which can somewhat distract patients and alleviate their anxious emotions. -
