The Grand Palace was the first royal residence in Bangkok. It was built during the reign of King Rama I in 1782. The reason for its construction was that he saw that Thonburi was not strategically located because it had a river running through the city, which was called Muang Ok Taek. Enemies could easily invade a city like this.
