A legendary local eatery at Sanur Harbor

#cityplaybook One of the must-eat on Bali recommended by netizens is Warung Mak Beng. The place has only one and only food option on the menu, which is a set of fried fish + fish soup + rice. You may call it boring, but common sense told me that restaurants that have guts to do this kinda menu are REALLY good. And it proceeded to exceed my expectations. The fish was as fresh as it could get and literally fried to perfection. The most tender and juicy flesh I have had of a fried fish (as shown in the pic). The sambal on the side was savoury with a dash of soy sauce, which is a rather uncommon variant on Bali but exactly how I preferred. The soup was bursting with seafood umami while packed with a great deal of complex spices. Not sure if it’s too much to western palate, but it’s superb to me. On both of my trips from Sanur to Nusa Penida and the way back, I made commitments to drop by this place despite the long queues. I had to wait for an hour for the 2nd time I came (without air conditioning), but it’s worth it. The walls adorned with photographs of notable patrons actually speak volume, making it clear that Warung Mak Beng isn't just a meal—it's a rite of passage for food enthusiasts visiting Bali. Highly recommend it to anyone especially if you’re taking a ferry from/to Sanur.
