3 Delicious Bali Dining Picks

While Bali is often celebrated for its natural beauty and rich culture, its culinary scene deserves just as much attention. Amidst touristy spots and over-commercialided views, we found a few gems that truly elevated our experience. Here are three restaurants that stood out—each offering a distinct taste of Bali, Japan, and Italy. 1. Uma Ceking, Tegallalang Tegallalang was high on my travel list, but the visit fell short of expectations. The area, once known for its cultural charm and scenic rice terraces, has become overly touristy, with artificial photo props and little else to admire. However, Uma Ceking restaurant offered a much-needed respite. Set in a scenic spot away from the hustle, we enjoyed a comforting lunch of Balinese Tumpeng, Soto, and a chilled Bintang beer overseeing the rice terraces. The traditional dishes were well-prepared, and the beer was the perfect companion on a sweltering afternoon. 2. Izakaya by Oku, The Apurva Kempinski Dining at Izakaya by Oku was a highlight of our trip. We opted for the Izakaya Journey—an all-you-can-eat experience that went far beyond quantity. Each dish was a delight, crafted with precision and creativity. My top picks were the Maguro Nori—fresh, raw tuna wrapped in crispy seaweed—and the Oku Karage, which was incredibly tender and full of umami. The flavours were so good, I went back for seconds. For those seeking a refined yet adventurous Japanese dining experience, this is a must-try. 3. The River Cafe, Maya Ubud Set within the serene Maya Ubud, The River Cafe offers a menu that surprises and satisfies. Known for its authentic Italian cuisine, the carbonara here stood out—it wasn’t overloaded with cream, allowing the true flavours to shine. I also tried the Tempeh Vegetarian Lasagna, a creative twist that fused local ingredients with Italian tradition. As a tempeh fan, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it worked in the dish. It was hearty, unique, and delicious. Although Bali’s popular tourist spots can sometimes feel commercialised, its culinary landscape tells a different story. Whether you're in the mood for traditional Balinese comfort food, modern Japanese creations, or inventive Italian fusion, these three restaurants offer memorable dining experiences that are definitely worth mentioning.
