April Destinations｜Changing of the Guard Ceremony at Syntagma Square, Athens

Syntagma Square, located in the heart of Athens, is adjacent to the Greek Parliament Building. It was named after King Otto signed the constitution here on September 3, 1843. On the eastern side of the square, across Amalias Avenue, stands the neoclassical Parliament Building, whose white marble columns and bronze-crowned roof form a distinctive part of Athens' skyline. Behind the building lies the National Garden, home to the Eternal Flame commemorating the Unknown Soldier. The changing of the guard ceremony takes place hourly on the hour (10:00 AM–5:00 PM, extended to 8:00 PM in summer). The guards, dressed in traditional attire featuring Phrygian caps, pleated skirts, and red pom-pom shoes, march in a "goose step" to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The ceremony lasts 15 minutes. On Sundays and public holidays at 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM, a full-dress ceremony is held, accompanied by a military band playing pieces such as the "Hymn to Liberty." It is recommended to arrive 20 minutes early to secure a good viewing spot.
